Mermaids have been around the imaginations of people for centuries, and today is no exception. A myriad of recent appearances in literature, movies, art, and stories of all kinds have boosted the mermaid's popularity, making them one of the most iconic fantastical creatures today.
There been many stories involving mermaids, with the most popular being the classic tale of "The Little Mermaid," originally written by Hans Christian Andersen in the 1800s. Many modern retellings of this story and others have made the mermaid a fantastical image of fantasy, childhood, and wonder.
As a result, most people tend to look at mermaids now in a more positive and friendly light, whereas in the past mermaids were often portrayed as creatures of mystery and danger. It makes sense then that mermaids have become a popular doll and toy for young children everywhere. Indeed, there is now an amazing variety of mermaid dolls in stores everywhere, with beautiful new mermaid plush being made and new creative ideas seen year after year, which brings us to our next point.
One of the great things about mermaids is that they allow for even more creativity in design than your average doll. The combination of the familiar parts of doll design (i.e. in the hair, face, etc.) with the more fantastical elements allow for designs beyond your typical doll outfit. Some mermaid plush and dolls have even branched out and drawn features from other fantasy creatures, such as our very own Sea Fairies, which are Mermaid Dolls with Fairy designs.
Obviously, mermaids are creatures of the sea, and will forever be associated with the animals and creatures of the ocean as well. The popularity of sealife, especially in plush and doll form, has an almost "complementary" effect to that of mermaids. Having a mermaid doll is much more rewarding when you have sea creatures to surround her with, and vice versa. As a result, the popularity of ocean stuffed animals and mermaids have helped make each other all the more popular.
While these are hardly the only factors, these three are definitely among the top reasons as to why people love mermaid dolls today. Entire mermaid brands and lines take up shelves in stores all over the world, reflecting our desire and love for fantasy.
